Ya had mine done a few weeks back when I was in Fl.
Had a oil change and asked them about it and it was fixed. Parts and labor came to about $87.00. Of course it was done free. |

The recall involves checking for continuity at the hitch wiring plug at 2 pins. There is NOT supposed to be continuity. If there is continuity, the bcm gets replaced and a bcm jumper harness gets installed. If there isn't continuity, then just the harness jumper gets installed.

This might be a good time to ask....
I just received the Nissan 4-pin harness kit...installed the rear bumper portion OK.... But when I removed the Pass. side kick plate...to plug in the relays and harness jumper....the is NO Plug in terminal under the kick plate !! And no power at the 4 pin connector now installed on the bumper. Just the normal bundle of wires passing thru the frame channel. I read P 5234 bulletin...but there is no mention of the lack of plug in under the black metal plate...under the right side threshold.... EDIT: OK its 10 mins later...and found the issue ME ! I was focusing on the black metal plate that is shown on page 3 of the instructions..as if the connector was behind it....but did find the connector under the side plate under the dash. Connected and all functions fine. |

You just made me feel better. I did the same thing. The instructions really do make you think the connection is behind that metal plate.

Just looked up the Vin #s that are involved on this recall, mine falls within the vin #s, but I have not received a notice from Nissan, Can I make an appointment with out the notice given that it is an affected model?? Just curious if anyone else has ran into this.
Regards to all, Rick |

My VIN falls in the range of the recall as well, and I haven't heard word one from Nissan! I did print out the recall and put it in the glove box, I'll bring it up when I go in for my next service.

Yes they will do it.
My Vin is in the affected vehicles so I called the dealer and will go in next Monday for the BCM issuel They knew all about it...it takes about a half hour... but no notice from them here also. Just the good notice posted on this great forum. |

Re: "Campaign" vs "Recall"

I believe the trailer wiring harness upgrade is a voluntary recall (campaign) rather than a federally-required safety recall. That may be why we did not get any notices about it.
When my '00 Wrangler got recalled for a fire hazard (turned out to be a bit of a joke, IMO...an unnecessary recall), I got a notice in the mail. When my '92 Toyota truck got "campaigned" for the infamous head gasket problem, I never received a notice. I found out about the problem when a warning popped up on a service record/bill for some routine work; that dealership was making a LOT of money getting customers to have the work done. (The amount that owners paid to get the head gasket replaced varied from 0 to a few thousand dollars, partly because Toyota was not actually required to fix it for free.) Why a bad head gasket that could cause a catastrophic engine failure on the road was not considered a "safety recall" is beyond me. And why the relatively safe "fire hazard" in my Wrangler was considered a safety recall was also beyond me. My Wrangler had lots of problems, but I think Chrysler kind of got stiffed on this one. The trailer wiring change protects you IF you hook up an improperly wired trailer. If you only hook up trailer(s) that are correctly rigged, there is no need for the upgrade. But I got it done anyway, just in case I ever use a rented or borrowed trailer (not likely). It's a free upgrade. _______________________

What about those like me who fall into the affected VINs and who did not have the trailer lights harness installed from the factory but just recently bought the kit from Nissan and had it installed and eveything works fine? (except checking the continuity issue). I bought the kit and installed it myself and everything works fine.

SulphurDave - Have the 'update' done. As pikabike states, it is good insurance. Why not be protected, espcially if it is free. Most cases require a simple wiring harness add-on.
Rare cases require the BCM (Body Control Module) to be replaced. My local dealer told me they have not found a bad one yet. I did not ask if there are doing the 'fix' on any truck without the trailer hitch wiring (or those that have non-Nissan wiring) but I imagine they would. Just be sure to request it to be done next time you drop it off for whatever. They may not check to see if it was done and simply go aherad and do it. |

It may be tough for some of the guys who have installed their own Nissan trailer harness to get the recall done. If your vehicle's vin does not come up as a vehicle that needs the recall, the dealer may not do it. Nissan may not pay the warranty claim to that dealer because it isn't a listed vin #.

Re: "Campaign" vs "Recall"

My truck did not fall 'in the VIN', but needed the harness portion to be done. I beleive the trucks that fall in the VIN range are more likely to require BCM replacement too.
It does not matter as far as Nissan is concerned who installed the OEM trailer wiring kit. I cannot speculate as to thier opinion regarding non-factory trailer wiring kits. Anyone have an experience in this situation? |

My LE KC came without the towing package, but the dealership fixed mine without any questions. My truck did
fall within the VIN range. They also fixed the rear jump seat hinges at the same time. It took about an hour to do both jobs. no problem with my BCM. OkieScot |

Re: "Campaign" vs "Recall"

I thought I would give the dealership a few months of fixing this issue before contacting them about it (so that I would have no problems) I received a letter from Nissan telling me to have it done.
Called the dealership today and told them I would like to make an appt to have this taken care of. They never heard of it. I tried to explain that this was a recall and finally just said LOOK IT UP ON YOUR COMPUTER. I have an appt later this week. |

Had the new harness installed on monday at dealer-I now notice that turn signal relay is making a louder click. Any reason why harness being changed would change turn signal sound?
