Installed Volant Intake on 04 Frontier |
Lead | |
|
I bought the intake for an 03 frontier since truckperformace.com($189.66 on clearance) only listed up to 03 and Volants website listed it through 04 so no big deal right, wrong. As you can see from the pictures below there was a problem with the install of the box. I guess Nissan decided to change an air conditioning line near the air box for 04 which is what caused the problem. Other than that ever thing else was fine. Love the growl it makes when you get over 2000 rpms. I still have to remove the fender resonator but that will eventually get done.

Looks good Steve. Did you notice any improvements in performance yet ? Some say it takes a while for the ECU to adjust.

Just a little. I was not going to do the mod until a had the exhaust done first, which I think whould make it work better. But, the intake was on clearance and I just could not pass it up.

Yes, that as a good price.

That was an incredible price. I had the first production unit and ran it on the dyno for Tony and paid $200. Looks like I am going to have a similar issue as you did when I go to put it in my 04. Did you have to modify anything to make it fit?
Thanks, Joe

No I did not have to modify anything. I am still thinking of ways to make it fit better, the only problems i had are the air temp. sensor wires are a little snug, and there is a rubber hose on the other side that is a little snug to. But if go buy some more hose and modify the box to fit around the air conditioner lines everything should be fine. Since it works right now and there is no problem I am going to wait until it warms up to start working on it.

Actually, that same "problem" you have circled in your picture is on my '03 as well. It didn't really affect the install at all, just made it a little more of a tight fit (added maybe an extra 3-5 minutes on the install). I assumed from the shape of the volant box that they had designed the box to work around it, but maybe i'm mistaken.

Saturday
First, I got the fender resonator out and that really helped the truck out. I will say I had the hardest time getting the bolt closest to the firewall out. Then it just took some time to remove the wheel liner and position the resonator to the correct spot to get it out. Second, I fixed the tight air temp wires by cutting the zip tie around the big large group of wires and moved it up some and zip tied it trew some holes that were below the old air box. Third, I used some of the left over rubber that was for the box to seal up to the finder and put it around the intake tube were it came through the box to the air filter to help seal that more tightly. To keep out the hot air. Also I removed the volant badge from the top of the air box. I will try to get pictures up in the next day or so. |

Here is what the stock air intake system looks like outside the truck.

yeah, i just ended up ripping the fender resonator box out since i couldn't get to that last screw behind the abs module. i tried for about 15 minutes, then just decided that the plastic was soft enough that it would give pretty easily. five seconds later i was proven correct. it is kind of cool seeing the stock intake put back together outside of the truck, though. mine is just sitting in pieces in a box in the garage, serving absolutely no purpose.

It took like 30 min. to fight with that bolt. I guess they did not want to make it easy to get out.

Those are great pics of the stock air cleaner assembly, Steve. Nice to see how everything fits together outside of the truck.

I did the same install. On the rubber hose on the firewall side of the box - if you get an elbow from your local parts house everything works like a champ. It's just 1/8" pipe thread. I got a 45 degree (instead of the standard 90 deg. ell) male/female brass elbow. Pu it in the box and the nipple into it. The hose routes fine now and it sure beats that nipple sticking straight out the side of the box (funky). Sure wish Nissan made the temp sensor wires about 2" longer!
