Rusted Gas Tank |
Lead | |
|
Has anyone else had this problem with a rusted out fuel tank? My P0456 and P0442 EVAP system leak codes were diagnosed by my dealer due to a rusted fuel tank
where the fuel sending unit is located. My truck is only five years old and I can't believe this has happened. The gas tank is on back order until at least
the end of September. Dealer says that not a dealer in the country has one. Why would there not be a gas tank to be had? Maybe this is a bigger problem than
meets the eye. Does anyone know if there is a Service Bulletin or Recall on this problem? The tank costs $350 and another $100 labor to install. I am totally
teed off with this rust bucket. Thanks.

Rusted gas tank?
I thought most gas tanks were plastic nowadays? |

nope, they are metal, especially around the sending unit.
someone mentioned this problem a few months back. dont remember who however.

I don't remember anything about a gas tank rust problem as far as recalls/TSBs but the location of your problem is suspicious since there was a recall for
corrosion in the fuel sender/fuel pump.

Thanks flyingarmadillo. I remember that recall as I was sent a notice and I did go to my dealer some years ago. They said mine at the time was fine. It sure is
suspicious though. I just printed out a copy of that particular recall. I believe I am going to call Nissan customer service and see what they say.

I just read the recall. It says at the beginning..."Procedures were added for inspecting the Fuel Tank Mounting Flange and Fuel Sending Unit O-Ring
Sealing Surface".
"Use this bulletin (NTB04-062b) ONLY'." "Discard copies of NTB04-062a." Then on Page 3 it says..."Based on the inspection results, you may have to replace the Fuel Tank." I just got off the phone with my dealer. He says the inspection was already done on my vehicle and they don't go back. I stated the original procedure did not include the amendment to the original recall bulletin. He said he will call his rep who handles this sort of stuff and get back to me. Why does one always seem to have to fight with Nissan??? I would think this is a safety issue as it states in their bulletin. |

My dealer says I need a new tank, too. Nipple where evap hose connects on right side is rusted. Pulling 442 code. Tank on b/o until mid-October. I'm going
to try to JB Weld mine...

Both Nissan and my dealer told me to go pound sand and they refuse to help me financially with this. This is the last Nissan rust bucket that I will ever
buy.

I have the same problem. The gas tank has rusted at the top near the sending unit so they cannot get a complete seal of the system. It reaks of gas fumes
while driving. I agreed to fix it with a new tank for $800 and then they told me that I couldn't get a new tank because they were on back order since
April of this year. No dealer loaner, no Nissan agreement that its a defect. They are finally coming around and escallated my status in the order system and
have given me a delivery date now of 3 weeks. Clearly this is a defective product, right? Problem is that my truck is a 2003 and my Certified Used status
expired in June of this year.

All I know it is a KNOWN issue. It's been brought up on the other forums as well. I do know this is the last Nissan that I will purchase as I have had many
other problems with this vehicle since day one. I know these Frontiers are "less expensive" than the Toyota Tacomas but as the old saying goes...pay
me now or pay me later. My repair $$$ on this Fronty has exceeded the upfront difference I would have had to pay on the Taco. Just goes to show ya...ya get
what ya pay for. True every time. See ya later Nissan and I will spread my dealings with Nissan to every known potential buyer out there.

jkon wrote:Nice theory but not supported by facts. I have a friend who bought a Taco the same time I bought my Fronty and his truck has been in the shop a lot more than mine and I have 3X the mileage he does. And for the 2003 model year the number of factory recalls is the same (4). If you look at the long term cost of repairs in Consumer Reports, the 2003 Taco is much worse on repair costs than the 2003 Fronty. Repairs on a Taco cost about 30% more than the same repair on the Frontier and they're in the shop more often. J

The fact of the matter is...I have owned just about every Toyota model car ever made and NEVER had problems other than normal wear and tear...not a single one.
This Fronty I have had two main oil seal s replaced, 3rd brake light leak and replaced twice ( I had to finally fix it right myself), roof paint peeled, rear
differential replaced, driver seat replaced, temp/compass unit replaced, fuel sending unit replaced, gas tank rusted and needs replacing. Granted some of all
this was done under warranty, but the hassle. I don't need it anymore. I am done with Nissan. Happy rusting!

I must admit I was pretty upset at the stupidity of Nissan for not having gas tanks available for a truck only 5 yrs old but it hasn't completely swayed me
from Nissan. Besides this issue, I have had no problems with my truck. NissanUSA finally did the right thing and admitted the problem and agreed to pay for
it, so they restored a lot of faith for me in their company. I still don't have a gas tank yet, but one is coming shortly.

I sent an email to Nissan consumer affairs (http://www.nissanusa.com/apps/contactus) regarding my rusted
gas tank issue. I got a call the next day informing me that they were looking into the problem and would let me know within a couple of days if they were
going to cover the replacement. I checked with my local dealer on the availability of tanks. They said they were behind 744 other dealers waiting for tanks. This is obviously a widespread problem. I suggest if your tank's rusted that you flood
Nissan's consumer affairs email and phone lines (800-NISSAN-1) with complaints. You should never have to replace a gas tank unless it's damaged from
an accident or abuse. This is not only a reliability issue, but also a safety issue. It's my opinion that Nissan should recall all D22s and replace the
tanks before somebody blows up. If Nissan doesn't do the right thing and cover the tank replacement at least on a case-by-case basis, I'd be
interested in getting a referral for a good class-action attorney. Anybody know one?

I have not given up...it's the principle of the matter now. I contacted the CEO of my dealership and explained the situation to him. He instructed his
parts manager to contact Nissan USA. Nissan has changed their minds and are now going to pay for the tank and labor as soon as the tank arrives. That could be
weeks yet.

Actually they're delaying to keep you from reporting it here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
those are the guys that can force a recall.

That has already been done by myself.

Gas tank finally arrived. They replaced my gas tank last Thursday. Fuel sending unit was also rusted at the flange area so they replaced that too. All covered
by Nissan. Over and out.

After reading this post, I am wondering if I may have the same problem in my 2000 SE CC V6 4x4. Lately, I can smell gas every time I start the truck and I have
noticed my mileage go down significantly over the past 6 months. I have not gotten any codes yet and I have not looked under the car to see if I can find a
leak or rust but could this be a rusted tank? Obviously, it looks like I will have to deal with it for another few months before Nissan does anything to fix it
but this post just got me thinking.
