Also, I need three other TSB's performed. The discolored bed liner, wavy tailgate protector and leaf spring squeak. Are TSB's something I can demand they do if the balk?

2005 V6 Frontier engine whine |
Lead | |
|
Just a few days ago my 2005 Frontier 4x4 Nismo with the 4.0 engine started to make a high pitched whining sound. It gets louder and changes pitch as rpms climb. I have looked for TSB's and found nothing on this matter. I am scheduled to take it to the dealer on Thursday but when I had the 2,200 rpm intake rattle they knew nothing about it so I had to print out the TSB for them. Based upon this, I doubt they'll have a clue about this whine so I would like to go in there with as much information as possible.

A TSB is like a Formal FYI to all the Dealerships. thanks to NissanHelp.com most of the TSBs we can actually look at. However they aren't intended for us to see. and also not intended for us to say I saw this TSB and want my vehicle looked at for it.
That Said I know I do it the same as you. I print out the TSB and take it to the Dealer. Dealers are real people running Real Businesses. Its like those annoying secretary types who send you like 200 FYI Emails a day. You don't have time to look at them all. The Same thing happens with the Service Department. The Mechanics are busy doing jobs all day. many of the Shops I have been to are production oriented, the mechanics don't have time to read all the TSBs...instead they are busy changing oil, and trying to make money so the service department can stay open. What worries me is that you are leading the Tech with the TSB and it may have nothing to do with your particular condition. For Example: I work on Computers all day long. What I hate is when somebody shows me their problem. And I believe them as a credible source. Then I spend alot of time trying to fix the problem...where as If I just saw their problem and they didn't lead me, I would have fixed the problem in a 1/3rd of the time. You get there eventually but you waste a considerable time on the information which is really good information, it just doesn't apply to your situation. Ultimate we don't care because its a warranty deal and we aren't going to pay for it. But we do pay for it in Higher Initial vehicle costs. I suppose I should say my Rear Leaf Springs squeak...then when they have it on the lift and call me...then I say oh yeah I saw a TSB #NT05-117 about squeaky leaf springs. |

Well I took it to the dealer and they claim the sound is normal. He also told me it has probably been happening from day one and I just now noticed it. Yeah right.
I am going to stalk other Frontier owners over the next couple weeks and see if their trucks have this issue. If not, the dealer will either fix it or state in writing that it isn't a problem. Greg |

Myself and others are having this problem as well.
The sound is the high-pitched whine similar to supercharged engines or sport bikes. I don't know how they can deny that it exists, and am following the same route as you next time that I take it in. THERE IS NO TSB FOR THIS! I will ask my dealership to file a formal report- we have to band together on this to get attention. I wonder if any of the other 4.0Ls out there have this problem (Z, XTerra, etc)... |

Im having a similar problem with my belt drive. I can put some belt jelly on it and that takes care of it for about a week but then its back. I would hate to think i have to lube the belt up every weekend just to get ride of that noise.
ADMIN EDIT: Sig removed. Too large per forum rules. You have been PM'd 3 times about this already. |

I just don't think it's the belts. I listened the other day and it seems to be coming from the middle left side of the engine where the airbox leads to. Maybe some type of air intake/induction noise???? I am going to investigate closer soon though.....

I had a high-pitched noise coming from the front area that went away. I posted about it at least twice, comparing its sound to that of a Coors "rocket" monster truck I once saw/heard in a stadium. The sound is almost like an overtone, and I've heard similar noise from some motorcycles.
But it did go away, so I never pursued the source of the sound. _______________________

I have a similar noise....I notice it more when i press the clutch in to change gears. How many of you hearing this noise have a 6-speed? I'm beginning to think my noise is either the throw-out bearing or the pilot bearing.

I too have the high pitched whine which sounds like a turbo. It kicks in somewhere between 2500 and 3000 rpms. Dealer said it was the air conditioner and now denies hearing it in the cooler weather. Anyone found the actual source yet.

I just picked up a frontier last week with the 4.0 v6 and it has this same horriable whine. Anyone fiquare out the cause of it i all ready changed the belt but its coming from the front lower left buy the air box side on the engine. Very annoying driving it. |

Well its the upper timing chain tensners, so im going to order the chains, guides and do the jo in the next week or so.. Nissan says 8-12 hours for an A-teck
but i looked at it and doesnt look like anything more than 6 to me, but could be wrong. Either way it need to get done. That whine in metal to metal
noise...the chain hits the button cap on the tensioner, after a while it will brake. Im wondering if people that rum systhetic oil it doesnt happen too? I just
got truck last week so after i fix it ill run mobil 1 and change every 3000. Nissan said its from not chaining the oil every 3000....but who knows. I just cant
believe that every frontier 05-09 is going to do this and nissan wont fix it. im 6000 over warrenty. these truck arn't going to last long if people dont
repair this on their own.

there are guys here that put well over 20K/year on their trucks without issues. I would say its more luck of the draw to have an issue with a nissan.

Got 71k on mine and have had a whine for a while now. Seems to get worst when the weather gets colder. Belt dressing helps. A shot of teflon lube on/in the
power steering pump shafts seems to help the most. Taking it in to get checked out Monday, before something (else) goes wrong.

Dealer says it's the timing tensioners. Nissan has issued an updated part(s). Tech said he's seen this even on synthetic oil vehicles. As much as I
love this truck, I am sick of throwing money into it because of lousy engineering and design!!!!! Think I'll be looking elsewhere when I'm ready to
buy.

Mobil1 isn't that much better then any other generic API grade SM motor oil. Working on this truck is not exactly easy. It is like every other truck now a days. Dis assembly just to get, to the part you need to work on, takes longer then changing out what is broken. |

DONE!!! Spent 15 hours, replaced timming chain secondary tensioners, and chains per the TSB!! What a job, long, tiring and very involved..I haven't found
anyone on here that has done one yet, at home. The Tensioners where gone, plastic worn right out and chains were rubing on metal, the chains were starting to
kink do the the metal to metal contact. This is something that needs attention asap and not something that people should continue to drive.

Wow...this is eye opening. All VQ40's will eventually wear out the timing chain plastic bushings...
costing big $$ to repair. I wanted to keep this truck for a long time....guess when it reaches 50-60K its time to move on. Too bad Nissan won't step up to the plate and fix it. If Nissan will prove me wrong....I'll gladly appoligize.
