Shock FYI |

Hey all, i just wanted to share an interesting shock story. I was experiencing some vibration issues and the truck was feeling squirrely in turns so i decided
to check the suspension. Lo and behold, the OEM shock on the rear driver side had actually broken off where the lower collar attaches to the truck and the
rear passenger side was leaking fluid! I was amazed, i'd never seen a shock actually break off before especially after only 60k. Anyways, replaced them
with bilsteins off of eshocks for about $65 each and what a difference! Feels like i'm driving a whole new truck.

I have had shocks break before. Mine was from the the bottom bolt binding on another rig.

I need to check my shocks. I have the originals at 198,000 miles thus far. I just got back from a 1400 mile round trip and am feeling the rear bounce like a
"Street Car" after going over a hump in the road, lol. I would like to get the OEM's but not sure if I want to pay the labor costs etc. Has
anyone ever bought shocks from TUFFY Muffler or those type of shops? Thanks,

I have been saying for a year I need to change shocks...
left front tire is starting to cup faster than I can rotate. I dont know if its suspension component wearing out or just the shocks, but I figured at 140K, shocks probably wouldn't hurt anyway.

SlyJhereg, my rear passenger side has broken off where the lower collar attaches just as your driver side did.
Although my shocks are at 198,000 miles.
Monroe Muffler gave me a quote of $300 to have Monroe sensitrac shocks installed for $300 ($220 after $80 rebate). Plus, they can be replaced for free after 50,000 miles. Is this a good deal? I am still going to call around other shops for more quotes.

Its probably a decent price if your going to keep the truck another 200K.
Shocks start at $25 to $30 each if you a DIY guy...

On the web, the 4 shocks are around $172 so the labor would be $128 before the $80 rebate. I hope the truck can go another 200,000 miles.

Im a DIY guy, I just dont always get around to doing it...
I would buy the shocks and pocket the $100... Ya know, I think these trucks are more than capable of 1/2 million miles, its just a matter of maintenance and not getting bored with the truck and trading it in...

Im running into a bit of a problem with my 2000... I keep driving my wife's 06 Xterra...

Goreds2, i looked at doing the Monroe Muffler sensitrac shocks myself but decided not to. The way i figure it, why not get the best shocks so
you only have to do it once? Even the guy at Monroe said the bilsteins are better and the sensitracs have not gotten very good reviews, while the bilsteins are
excellent. And to be honest, putting on the back shocks is veeeeery easy to do and the front ones just take a little more time since you have to take the front
wheels off. I did mine in a snowstorm outside without a lift at night in under an hour with just a piece of cardboard to lie on and a borrowed torque wrench.
Maybe get the back two first and see if you like them and then buy the front two. Let me know how it feels when you get the new ones on, i guarantee it will
put a smile on your face!

I've had the Rancho RS9000X adjustables on my truck for at least 3-4 years now and i like being able to adjust them for different tasks. They would give a
nicer ride (faster response) if they were gas charged, but i think they work fine for what i use them for. And it's kind of nice to be able to dial in
under steer or over steer by changing how hard/soft the shocks are. I might go to the bilsteins later if these ever wear out.

SlyJhereg wrote:_______________________________________________________________________ I may consider that as I am still calling around for pricing. Is it really that easy to change the rear shocks? (I am not too mechanically inclined) Thanks,

goreds2 wrote:there are two nuts that hold the shocks in place. the only hard part is the shocks have an internal spring that you have to compress some to get the shock back onto the stud.

Replaced the originals at a little over 100k with monroes. Not the god ones, just the normal ones. Hated them. Worst shock ever, felt like I was driving a 78
Cadillac with worn out suspension - a real barge. Also made the rear sag horribly with any load. I got a pair of Gabriel sky jacker air shocks for the rear.
Never could get them to hold air for 24 hours, or even 12. Eventually replaced all 4 again with Rancho RS5000. Love them. Nice and firm. Truck rides on rails
again. And the shocks are easy as cake to replace. I paid for the 1st time on the fronts as I wasn't sure, but my guy only charged me $5 a shock, they were
so easy. Next time I did it myself.

OK, here are the quotes I received.
All quotes are parts and labor. Monroe: $300 out the door price. Midas: $538 before tax Tuffy: $400 before tax OEM Dealership: $487 before tax Discount Muffler (hometown business): $360 plus tax Here is the deal I am going to go with and have installed on Thursday: A local shop said I can pick out the shocks and they will install all four of them for $80. I bought 4 Gabriel Guardian (Part # Front-81507 / Rear-81318) shocks at $16.99 each. So the total for parts and labor will be around $160 after tax. I like the bilstein shocks but I need to save the extra money for a scheduled tuneup. Thanks everyone for your opinion.

The installer noted that the old shocks had one leaking and another one hanging loose which I mentioned in an earlier post. The ride is pretty good for the $16.99 each price I paid for them. I am sure the more pricey ones give you a better ride. Plus, these ones bought from Auto Zone is good for the life of the truck. I will keep my receipt for a free replacement!
