Nissan just blew me off. Guess they ARE an American car company now.

I have spent some time looking around Club Frontier and Xterra Owners Club.
the good news is this seems to be effecting a minority (less than 1/2) of Frontiers and there are only a limited number of Xterra owners that are having the issue. Some people have over 100K without issue. the poll I found on Club frontier it seems to be 30 to 70K is the range of failure. My wife's Xterra is three years old with 20K on the clock and no issues as of yet. I feel better about this, and I am likely gonna buy another Xterra. I am gonna keep a couple grand in savings just in case. This is a frustrating and scary issue, but I think overall, these are good engines...

Is this two different issues here? I have an 05 that has the high pitched noise when it's cold out. It's been in the shop twice and it seems to be
fixed for awhile. Now it's back again and now out of warranty!! I'm concerend when I hear about metal on metal contact. Not sure if this is the same
issue as that one or not. I think there was a TSB about the cold sound and I thought it was having to do with the tensioner but not sure.
I'm wondering if Nissan will pay for this since it was in the shop twice before for the same problem???? Thanks Spawnman

Mathster wrote:The GF really wanted an X but nobody would cut a very good deal around here. So we ended up with an FJ Cruiser because the deal was so good ($25K out the door including TT&L on a $32K truck plus another $7.2K trade for her '03, I4, 4WD, std cab - bench seat, taco!) Maybe we lucked into something better - it kinda sounds like Nissan is taking a page from Ford with the plastic engine parts. Although the X would have been a nicer commuter she can't handle a couple thousand bucks for a contigency .

I have looked at the FJ a couple times, It just hasn't grown on me yet.
I dont like the two tone paint. I dont like the suicide rear doors. I do like the body lines on the front half. It looks like two different people designed the front and the back halves without consulting each other. I agree there is still a big unknown on these engines, but I figure we run that with any new generation of vehicle.

The biggest problem with the FJ is visibility, it's like looking out of the front window of a MD-80 (FJ) compared to the bubble canopy on an F-16 (Xterra).
Not only is the rear visibility on the FJ bad but the front and side visibility is awful too.
