I just ordered some Green Stuff 7000 series pads for the front, and 6000 for the rear. The dealer tells me that I'm at 5% remaining - too close for comfort and not ready to upgrade the rotors just yet.

Anyone changed thier own front pads yet? If so care to provide any helpful hints?

Sure, changing them are easy.
Remove tire and turn the wheels so the back of the caliper is facing out towards you. There are 2-14MM bolts that hold the caliper on the wheel support. Remove them and the caliper will slide back off of the rotor assembly. Use a wire coat hanger to hold the caliper up and away from the wheel/rotor, to prevent the rubber brake line from crimping. The pads should slide out away from the rotor. Press equally onto the two round caliper pistons to push them into the caliper assembly. You may have to remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir to prevent overflow, sometimes not. Clean the stainless steel slide seats of road grime. Installation is the reverse...remember to put the small spring back into the bottom resessed holes in the pads and shims onto the back of the pads. Remember, do not step on the brake pedal while the caliper is off of the rotor. Truck-On....

Hey macnmod do you also get low (< 18) MPG? Or is your frontie an Auto?
Swapping notes. I was worried about you having needed new ones at 49K. So I just looked at mine. I rolled 70K earlier today. I have 5/32 still there on the Fronts. 21/64 on the Rear. (Drills bits come in handy sometimes). Starting thickness is listed as .39" and .43" for the Front and Rear respectively. So if we do a little math (mostly just cross multiplication and division). I find that if I leave a Safety Margin of 1/16" I won't need Fronts pads till 98K, and Rears pads till 252K. ----------------------- Lifetime MPG /w my 2005 KC SE 6Sp 4x4 = 20.094 |

That is the range I get on my gen 1.
my gen 2 gets close to 21 on the highway. my wife driving week after week around town gets about 13 to 14.
While you didn't realize it, the National Anthem does end with "Gentlemen Start Your Engines!"

Mines an auto, around town I average 17-18/mile.. On the highway when doing the speed limit (60-65) I'm pulling mid 23's..
