HELP!....How do you get more mpg in your frontier? |
Lead | |
|
I have an 05' frontier crew cab nismo ed. it has the volant cool air intake and the nismo catback exhaust. No other mods to date. I get 13.5 mpg city and apx 16.8 highway. I do not have a heavy foot (but i do like a good race), I dont run the ac often/ high and i dont run with all the windows down i usually only use the sunroof. what can i do to improve this. ive seen those adds for "turbonator" to improve MPG but dosent the manafold have special tubes and fins to do the same thing the "turobantor" does? will this double cyclone cause back pressure or will it make it go even smoother? Orwhat about adding throtle body spacer. i cannot seem to find upgraded throtle body's. any tips would be great!
THANKS!! ...HELP... ~Blake~ 05' Frontier crew/Nismo

Mine averages about 16.8 overall. Most of my driving is open road at highway speeds. I actually think I get better mileage (.1 - .2 mpg) with the AC on, according to the on board computer. I've added a K&N air filter and Gibson exhaust which haven't given me any noticeable gains in HP or mpg. I've been told by some of the Honda guys I know that play around with their toys, that with the computer systems in the vehicles now will read these types of "improvements" as added air flow through the engine and will adjust the fuel mix and amount accordingly. Thus causing more or excess fuel to be used. I cannot document this but it does make sense to me. I'd really like to increase my mpg too. With todays gas prices, I had to resort to car pooling (which isn't really a bad thing) just to save enough money to make ends meet.

That seems a bit low. Mine's '05 SE 6-spd, I get a minimum of 15 around town (even with the occasional flogging) and 20-22(22 max on one trip, 60-65mph most of the way on 92 octane; normally about 360 miles on a tank if its all highway) on the highway.
The worst I've ever had was pulling a 6x10 UHaul fully loaded at 70. Had to stay in fifth gear the entire time and got an average of 14mpg. Mind you this was in Iowa, where they put random amounts of ethanol in the fuel and don't tell you. Check tire pressure and run it at the high end of the rating; it will help more than you think. The Nismo, IIRC, has 17" wheels and 31" rubber, which adds to rotating inertia. The lower gearing of the rear-end will also hurt your chances of getting better mileage. I have gotten nearly 18 around town if I'm ginger on the gas pedal. I don't know about anyone else around here, but I'd be willing to have a switch in the cab t cut out about 50-60HP to go up to 25mpg or so on the highway and 20 around town consistantly; though I'll not hold my breath on that one. Good mileage is what the Civic is for. |

I just don't see how people are getting 14-15mpg. If I drive nothing but city I'll get at minimum 16.5 and on a recent trip to the beach on I-95 I got 23mpg. I certainly don't baby my truck and get on it when I need to. Of course I don't race every tom @#%$ and harry that pulls up beside me either.

![]() This is after several days of in and around town driving. Computer hasn't been reset for weeks. My calculations go right along with the truck computer. MPG is one of the things that disappoints me about my truck. |

Turbonator=bad news. It's junk, and actually restricts your air volume. With my pokey little 4-cyl, I got 32.9mpg on one tank, but that was driving like Ms. Daisy. Normal commuting mileage is around 27, but that's with me traveling around 60-65, coasting down hills and up to lights, etc.

In my 05 LE 4x4 I've been very happy with my mileage as of late. I'm averaging around 21.9 to 22.2. I have really been paying attention to my driving and using the cruise control as much as possible. I travel about 65 miles a day round trip to and from work and it's on side streets, 55 to 60mph.
I just turned 31,000 and have no mods to it at all. It's like it knows how I drive and has adjusted to it. Spawnman

on our first highway trip with our 05 SE, we got 22 mpg. When we tow our 20 ft. Silver streak trailer (2800 lbs) we got around 17, of on and off highway driving. I don't pay any special attention to how i drive in respect to braking, acceleration, or coasting etc. I don't coast down hills (too much risk for me) and i don't take 2 miles to get up to speed either. I wish we had the mpg display on our dash, that is handy.

Blake, I also have a 05 Nismo auto and my last trip to the dealer (125 miles one way) I got 24 mpg. I have the Gibson cat and was running my Nismo CAI. Didn't run the A/C because it was early morning when I left. I put the stock intake back on because it's been so hot here. Will put Nismo CAI back on when it cools back down some. My mpg with or without the intake sucks here. I live in a very small town and a drive to work is about 5 mins.

you know, I dont understand why anyone would , or should be disappointed with getting the stated mpg. It's an estimate and one that by most accoutns of the test, one based on a flawed test.
as for improving mpg's, check your tires and make sure they are properly inflated. other than that, dont know what to tell you that you dont already know. '05 Storm Gray 4x4 Frontier SE CC 6-spd

Seriously, to get better gas mileage you need to not hammer it on the gas. You might not think you are, but your MPG numbers show it. You don't have to be the first one to the otherside of the intersection. Try to finesse it. If you notice the tranning hunting through gears going what you think is a steady speed, it means you are too agressive with the pedal. The Trottle is very sensitive.
My Wife Drives with a Heavy Foot...she doesn't think she does but I know that she does. When I drive her Murano I get 25-28 MPG. She on the other hand is lucky if she gets 20 MPG. My Frontier is a Standard so I'm biased/biggot; but Driving a Standard Tranny is all about finesse. My Wife cannot drive a standard and can only drive an automatic, she has less a feel for subtlety or finesse with the trottle. She doesn't drive fast she just wastes gas. Cummins Did a Study on Gas Mileage...alot of it doesn't apply to average schmo like you and me. Look at these quotes from Page 22 of their Study. Efficient Driving Behavior The following is a short list of behaviors exhibited by those drivers that consistently obtain good fuel economy. Simple behaviors, like coasting to a stop instead of staying on the accelerator until the last minute and then braking hard, add up to significant fuel savings after thousands of miles. High average vehicle speeds with minimum time spent at maximum vehicle speed High percent trip distance in top gear (90+ % recommended) High percent distance in cruise control Minimum percent Idle/PTO operation Minimum service brake activity Number of Sudden decelerations Service Brake Actuation's/1000 mi Rock-Solid Rule The most efficient drivers get about 30% better fuel economy than the least efficient drivers. www.everytime.cummins.com/every/pdf/MPG_Secrets_Whitepaper.pdf |

Lots of good responces, but you are all right something is not adding up. (in responce to the swith thingy) i have the V.D.C ON So that wouldnt be the problem. I will check my air pressure, Im running simmilar tires to the factory 30'' tires 14'' rims Nothing special. ( a project im working on will it work?)
I am remanufacturing a 05' hood im adding hood vents and scoops to my likeing. by re routeing the air intake custom to make the hood a true intake. will that improve my MPG at all or reduce it. (cooler air and Raming it in.) beacause with the volant air intake the "ram tube" is TINY and right next to the radiator so OVIOUSALY im picking up heat from the radiator and putting it into my air so my air is not as cool as it could be and not as strong, its trapped in a box so thats the only way in....... sorry if its out there i have wild thoughts and i like to build em. 2005' Frontier Crew Cab Nismo 4x4

Cool Air=more dense air=engine needs more fuel to match the dense air.
Honestly, hotter air is less dense, and the fuel vaporizes more easily in hot air, making a more complete burn in the cylinder, providing more efficient fuel usage. Inflate your tires to slightly over factory specs posted on the door jam, make sure your air filter and fuel filter is clean. Change your tranny, coolant and differential fluids regularly. And avoid ethanol gas. Other than that, keep your RPM down. Good luck. New guy here. I'll just add that I'm actually THRILLED to be getting near the top of the 15-20 mpg range advertized. I was hoping that this horsepower monster would give me 17 as I always averaged near the bottom of the EPA estimate on my last 4 trucks. I've only got 3000 miles on my 07 (LE, short bed, crew cab, 4x4) Fronty and am averaging 19.5-20 mpg on most fill ups.( That's with about 50% rural driving, 25% city, 25% highway.) That's as good as I was getting with my 01 Toyota Taco 4 cyl-5 spd and a whole lot better than the new Taco's are delivering ( on premium fuel).
FWIW, I find that the truck LOVES to be in that 45-65 MPH and 1200-2000 RPM range that you get in high/5th gear. Keep it there with a light foot, and it sips gas. Drive it like you stole it , and it's going to get costly ( but admittedlyfun! )I'd also add that in my past experience those gadgets and add ons that promise better mileage never deliver. ( and sometimes hurt the cause) Makes sense. If the maker could appease the EPA ( and sell more vehicles) by adding a $10 part to gain mileage credits, it would be factory issue. BTW, Great site . Looking forward to checking in regularly as i enjoy my new frontier! |

The Tonneau will not necessarily up the mileage.
I have one on my 05 crew se. There has been no change in MPG from before to now. I have a constant mix of 60% city, 40% highway and am always at 19.5-21 MPG. It is never lower or higher, no matter the percentage. If I was getting 16, I would be trading it in. |

I drive my NISMO pretty hard, I get between `17 and 22 MPG. I pretty much drive in a manner as perscribed by cummings.
My wife has a 350 Hp Volvo, she gets about 19 Mpg, I get close to 24. I drive at at least 80 to 100 MPH, she never exceeds 65. She is on the brakes, and on/off the gas. Does nto know the meaning of smooth. Makes a huge difference. Also, I tend to keep the rpms closer to the Hp/torque(where a gas engine is most efficient) instersection whereas she lugs it. |

Re: HELP!....How do you get more mpg in your frontier?

i figured since everybody and their brother put in their 2 cents, i might as well too. it might help. a couple months ago i did a road trip through the appalachians pulling an enclosed trailer, it weighed maybe 2500lbs. up and down hills for 500 miles on interstate trying to keep up with traffic at 70-75 mph. i did this basically to see what kind of milage i'd get, knowing it would suck gas. i got about 13 mpg. figures i guess. probably hard on the truck too.
last weekend i drove down the florida keys, probably averaging 40-45mph, with not too many stops. plus i drove another 200 miles on top of that at 65 mph. i kept the driving very smooth, just to see what kind of mpg i'd get, and i averaged 22 mpg. i dont know much about the computer thing. so what i can add is that a concious effort to drive nice, will help mpg. i drive an 07 with a 2.5 inch leveling kit. |

Re: HELP!....How do you get more mpg in your frontier?

For mileage issues you gotta go with the standard tranny. Plus as everyone has mentioned your personal driving habits count a lot toward your mileage.
I got in my wifes Sebring convertable the other day with her and I hit the computer to see what the avg mpg was and I almost wet my pants when it popped up at 15.8. This is in a v6 sedan and it's only getting 15? I know that part of it is the fabric top adding air resistance. But I think a big part of it is her driving style. I speed while she barely drives the speed limit, yet I get better mileage than she does because I'm gentler on the gas and brakes than she is. She doesn't think she has a lead foot but when compared to me she does. In my truck I almost never get the rpms over 2k when shifting up through the gears(drives my son nuts cause I never USE the power of the truck!) I do use it but only when I need it. With my driving style I get 19-20 in normal commuting and 24 on the highway. Another thing that can effect your mileage is your normal following distance. I drive curvy country roads on my way to and from work. If I get caught in a line of cars on these roads I stay further back from the last car than many others do. But as the pack ahead of me goes into one of the many curves and the first car hits their brakes then they all have to but I'm able to just coast a little and not brake so I don't lose as much momentum as I would if I had to brake. I even make it a game to see how much of the drive I can make without hitting the brakes to slow for curves or hills. |

Quote: I have had two different rigid toneau covers on my 00 KC truck. Highway driving, I noticed no difference. My daily commute, I noticed a slight drop that I attribute to the extra weight. The drop was maybe 1/2 mpg. My 06 X gets a pretty consistant 15 mpg with my wife driving it around town all the time. A highway trip will show up as an improvement. An all highway trip pushes to close to 24 mpg in an xterra. |
